I did this design in collaboration with Bryce Louw, a graphic designer who has himself been involved in Steampunk graphic-novel type design and shares an interest in it with me, along with the ability to conjure up very convincing 3D imagery in his head and put it to paper.
The design process thus happened like this: We spoke through our references and established what the key elements of Steampunk were (Victorian reference, and futuristic elements
Relative to Victorian times). These elements then had to coincide with the Steampunk “characters” assigned of which one was an Upcycler and the other a Futurist.
Bryce and I bounced ideas off of each other by each attacking the body templates which he had drawn and printed with a pen or pencil as an idea fleeted through our heads. Our design progressed from a quite literal interpretation of a corset to a more abstracted rib cage-like accessory which incorporated patterned leather and Victorian styled catches and locks into the design.
This design was for the “futurist” and worked on the idea that she no longer used conventional banking but rather carried her fortune on her at all times as she pursued revolution: forever on the move.
